Noetic: Knowing Is Not Understanding
Two students
Think of two students who both get every exam question right.
One has memorised a thousand worked examples. The other understands the subject.
On the exam you can’t tell them apart. Off the exam, the difference is everything.
The first student keeps getting better
Today’s AI is overwhelmingly the first student, and an extraordinary one. It improves every month. Reasoning models now think step by step before they answer, and they explain themselves fluently.
But a fluent explanation is not understanding, and nothing in getting better at exams turns the first student into the second. We’ve spent a decade making the first student stronger. Far less has been done about the second.
Why it matters now
AI is moving from answering questions to making decisions about loans, diagnoses, hiring and infrastructure.
There, the difference between the two students stops being academic. It’s the difference between a system you can rely on and one you can only hope about.
The name
Noetic comes from the Greek noēsis: the act of understanding. It is the whole project in one word.
What would it take to build the second student?
That is the question Noetic exists to answer.
